How to Activate an eSIM: Jio, Airtel, Telcel, Globe, Movistar, Claro
How to activate an eSIM or change a physical SIM to eSIM on Android, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel or iPhone, with the steps for Jio, Airtel, Telcel, Globe, Movistar and Claro.
Last updated: November 2026 (Android 15/16, One UI 7/8, HyperOS, ColorOS, iOS 18/26).
Quick answer: check that your phone supports eSIM, ask your carrier for the eSIM in its app, by SMS or in a store, then scan the QR code while you are on Wi-Fi. Never delete an eSIM from the phone unless your carrier tells you to.
Before you start
- Check the phone: dial *#06#. If you see an EID number, the phone supports eSIM. Phones sold in some countries do not support it, even if the same model does elsewhere.
- Check that the phone is unlocked, or locked to the carrier you are using.
- Use Wi-Fi. The eSIM profile downloads over the internet, and your old SIM may stop working during the change.
- Keep your email working. Many carriers send the QR code by email.
Install the QR code
- iPhone: Settings -> Mobile Service (Cellular) -> Add eSIM -> Use QR Code.
- Samsung Galaxy: Settings -> Connections -> SIM manager -> Add eSIM -> Scan QR code.
- Other Android phones: Settings -> Mobile network or SIMs -> Add eSIM -> Scan QR code.
After it installs, switch on mobile data and check the APN. Most eSIMs load the correct APN by themselves.
Jio eSIM
MyJio app: search for eSIM, choose Switch to eSIM, confirm your email, enter the EID and enter the OTP.
By SMS:
- Send GETESIM <32-digit EID> <15-digit IMEI> to 199 from your Jio number.
- You receive a 19-digit eSIM number. Send SIMCHG <19-digit number> to 199.
- Wait for the 2-hour cooling period, then send 1 to 199. Send 8 to cancel.
- Answer the automated call and follow the prompt. If you miss it, send RECALL to 199.
- Tap the notification or scan the QR code from your email.
Your physical SIM stops working when the change goes through, and SMS on the number stays off for 24 hours. See the Jio APN settings.
Airtel eSIM
- Send eSIM <your registered email> to 121.
- Reply 1 to the message you receive, without delay.
- Answer the confirmation call. If you miss it, the request can be cancelled.
- Scan the QR code that arrives by email. Activation can take about 2 hours.
The steps can change, so follow the messages Airtel sends you. See the Airtel APN settings.
Telcel eSIM
- iPhone: with iOS 17.4 or newer and an active Renta, Mixto or Amigo line, open Settings -> Mobile Service (Cellular), choose the line and tap Convert to eSIM. The physical SIM cannot be used again after this.
- Android: a Telcel Customer Service Centre checks your IMEI and gives you a QR code, at no charge. You keep your number and plan.
- New line: Amigo eSIMs are sold online, and the QR code arrives by email.
See the Telcel APN settings.
Globe eSIM
In the GlobeOne app, go to SIM Services -> Change SIM -> Physical SIM to eSIM, check that you are eligible, enter the OTP and give your email address. New prepaid eSIMs are also sold in GlobeOne. If you lose the code, ask for a new one in GlobeOne or at a Globe store. Check the app for the current steps and price. See the Globe APN settings.
Movistar eSIM (Spain)
Contract customers can ask for an eSIM in the private area of the website or in the Mi Movistar app, by calling 1004, or in a Movistar store. Prepaid customers use 1004 or a store, and receive a QR code. Movistar in other countries has its own process, so check with your local Movistar. See the Movistar Spain APN settings.
Claro eSIM
Claro runs separately in each country. In Colombia, ask for the eSIM QR code at a Claro service centre. In Argentina, you can ask at a branch or in Mi Claro. Elsewhere, ask Claro which options you have and whether your plan is included.
Common eSIM problems
- The QR code does not work: many QR codes work only once. Check Wi-Fi and try again. If it still fails, ask the carrier for a new code.
- Do not choose Delete eSIM or Remove Data Plan. On Jio, for example, a removed eSIM means a store visit with your ID.
- No network after installing: switch Airplane mode on and off, then check that the eSIM line is turned on.
- No mobile data: see Mobile Data Not Working After Adding APN.
