Mobile Data Not Working After Adding APN: How to Fix It

Mobile data not working after adding APN on Android, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Xiaomi, Oppo, Realme, Vivo or iPhone? Go through these checks in order; most phones connect after the first three.
Last updated: October 2026 (Android 15/16, One UI 7/8, HyperOS, ColorOS, iOS 18/26).

Quick answer: after saving a new APN you must select it in the Access Point Names list, then switch Airplane mode on and off. If data still does not work, check that the APN type contains default and that Proxy and Port are empty.

1. Select the new APN

Saving an APN does not make it active. Open Access Point Names again and tap the round button next to the APN you added. Only the selected APN is used for mobile data.

2. Check the APN fields

  • APN: no spaces before or after, all in lower case unless the carrier uses capitals. internet and internet. are different APNs.
  • APN type: must contain default (for example default, supl or default, supl, mms). An APN with the type mms only gives MMS, not internet.
  • Proxy and Port: leave them empty (Not set) unless your carrier asks for a proxy. A wrong proxy blocks all browsing.
  • Username, Password and Authentication type: fill them only if your carrier uses them. Most carriers today leave them blank.
  • MCC and MNC: keep the values the phone shows. If you change them, the APN may disappear from the list.
  • APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6 works on almost every network. If the phone connects but no page opens, try IPv4.

3. Restart the connection

  1. Switch Airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds, and switch it off.
  2. If that does not help, restart the phone.

4. Check mobile data, SIM and balance

  • Mobile data is on in Quick Settings, and Data saver is not blocking the app you test with.
  • On a dual SIM phone, the SIM with the data plan is chosen for mobile data (Settings -> SIM manager / SIMs -> Mobile data).
  • Your plan or prepaid balance still has data. An empty data bundle looks exactly like a wrong APN.
  • Abroad, Data roaming is switched on.

5. Reset the APN list

If you edited the carrier APN and lost it, reset the list so the phone loads the default APN from the SIM again. Steps for each phone are in How to Reset APN Settings to Default.

6. iPhone: remove old profiles

  • Go to Settings -> General -> VPN & Device Management and remove any old carrier or APN profile, then restart.
  • Install the latest carrier settings: Settings -> General -> About, and accept the update if one appears.
  • Reset the iPhone APN fields: Settings -> Mobile Service (Cellular) -> Mobile Data Network -> Reset Settings.

Still no data?

Put the SIM in another phone. If it works there, the problem is the phone settings; if it fails there too, the SIM or the line needs to be checked by the carrier. If you cannot change the APN at all, see APN Greyed Out or Cannot Edit APN.
